School Projects: Book Arts

Book Arts has been one of my favorite classes at college. I took it Winter 09 semester.

We learned how to make many different types of books and boxes. From figuring out measurements cutting/tearing/folding paper, sewing together pages, covering book board, choosing book cloth, making and buying paper, it was quite the experience.

They are a lot better to see and examine in person, but I thought it would be fun to post some picture of them. If you ever want to really see them let me know.

We made a variety of different kinds of books and a box to hold them all.

Cord Bound Book

It has two different kinds of leather and I added a book mark.

I really like the end papers too.

It was my favorite book.

Long Stitch Book

I added beads to this one, small ones for decoration and a big one for the clasp. I looked around for leather and ended buying a pack of scraps. Then I discovered they were all too small. So I had to be creative and sew different pieces together. But in the end I really liked how it turned out!

The Collaborative Pop-Up Book

As a class we made a pop up book. We decided our theme would be "Unique Animals." We slit into pairs. Each pair came up with an animal and created 19 of their page, one for each student. Then we took the pages and bound them for our Pop-Up book. It was a lot of fun.

The page my partner and I made. We decided to set our type on a small press. It was neat to set the individual letters, roll and apply the ink. Yet, it made me appreciate computers! Also, we got to see a printing press replica of the one the Book of Mormon was first printed with. They recently have gotten one at BYU-Idaho.

This was a fun simple book. Also the cover paper is paper than I marbled.

MARBLED PAPER

One day in class we got to marble paper. (The inside of a hymn book is marbled paper). It is an interesting process. You have a tray with with liquid. Then there are a variety of ink colors. You select the colors you want and apply then onto the liquid by drops or splattering it. Then you can create designs by swirling the inks. You then place your paper over it and pull it off. The ink sticks to the paper and then dries. It was really fun!

BOXES

Along with our books we were required to make two boxes.
This was a box i made for my scriptures. Though it turned out kind of big and bulky. But it's pretty and I like it anyway.
I added an indentation of the Rexburg Temple in the corner.

The inside. I used beautiful paisley paper. I made a pocket on the lid so I can put things in it. I like the ribbon that ties it shut too.A smaller box I made. These types of boxes are called clam shell.

CONTENT BOOK

For the final project we had to make a content book. After brainstorming a few different ideas i decided to make a book of the different cakes my sister and I have made. I used Adobe Illustrator and put it together. It was A LOT of work and made for a stressful end of the semester, but in the end it was worth it.

The cover. I cut a cake shape out of the book board. I then put three different colors of paper in the book. I ripped them so that they would overlapped for the different layers on the cake. It was fun...but difficult.

A little back ground information i included.

I divided it into three different sections. Birthdays, Holidays and Special Occasions. There are a lot of pages I just included one from each section.

Eye, Eye, Eye!!!

My contacts had been very irritable for me so I finally resorted to just wearing my glasses. So after about six months or so (I was in Idaho at school) I finally went to the eye doctor to figure out what is wrong with my eyes. My eye doctor thinks it's Giant Papillary Conjunctivitis. Oh boy! It is an immunity the body has with the proteins that collects on contacts. Bumps are formed on the eye lid that cause the contact to move around. It looks really gross, from the pictures i saw on the Internet. I am trying some eye drops to see if that will help. If not i may not be able to wear contacts anymore. I am going to the eye doctor next week to see how things are going. It wasn't the best of news, but it could be worse.

Summer Time so Far

It's been an okay summer. Long, 5 months is long. I'm ready to go back to school. I have about 66 or so more days :) But it's been fun too. Here are some of the things that have happened. A few last memories of Winter09 semester

So I realize it is July...haha and I'm making a post of winter semester. haha. Yeah I'm bad at this. I've been updating my family blog while I've been home and doing both is just too much. Anyways, but it's kind of like a journal/scrap book for me so i wanted to include these before i went on.

Winter semester was really hard for me.

I made it through and grew a lot. Here's just a recap of a few memories.

The beginning of the semester we decided to make some goals.

Fall 08 Randomness

At the apartment we did a lot of interesting things.

Here are just a few.

Not your typical pillow fight.

Katie took it from me knowing it is my favorite pillow. But I did get it back :)

This happened a lot and sometimes it's known to happen until 4 or so in the morning.

Well once upon a day the kitchen was occupied, and I had a painting to do.

I didn't want to head up to campus so I resorted to this spot. I actually came to find it quite peaceful. So I turned up the music, sang a long, and painted away. Taresa joined me, til she fell asleep that is :)

A Nightly Ritual

This was a certain time to remember. Who knows exactly what we were doing, but we did have a good time. We always planned to have a second one of these, but um somehow it just didn't happen, I'm not sure why? :)

Conclusion:

You never know what will happen when after curfew, when all the guys are gone, the blinds are shut, and the girls are left to themselves to party:)

Summer Smiles

During the summer I started a service group. I was involved in some service programs at college, so I wanted to try and continue that during the summer. We did a different service project every week. It wasn't as successful as I had hoped, but it was still a good experience. Every week was different and sometimes the turn out wasn't so great, but we still were able to make people smile.

I had shirts made. It was so exciting when I finally got them!

We did a lot of different projects. Some of them were, cleaning yards, cleaning house, humanitarian projects (jingle boxes, quilts, stuffed animals, file folder games), visiting nursing homes, delivering baked goods, caroling, and more.

Summer '08: Gettin' Creative

During the summer Heidi and I decided to get more familiar with the kitchen.

We came up with some interesting creation, some successful and some not so successful.

This is when the cake decorating began! And oh have we had fun with that!

Summer '08 Photo Shoot with the Hermanas

One fine summer day when the sun was shinning us three hermanas went over the river and through Tumble Weed Lane to Grandmothers house for a fun filled time of a photo shoot!

One more day! Actually I will be leaving for home tomorrow, in about 24 hrs! I am very excited! Oh boy, it'll be good to have a break. I can't wait to sleep! It's been a tough week, no all nighters this week but pretty close. There was once when i stayed up til 4:30 in the morning. Yeah, my roommate and I. What were we doing you ask. Why homework of course. You may think that is dedication, but no more like procrastination. We went to a play that night it was 2 1/2 hrs long, that's about home much sleep we got that night too. :) We got creative in keeping ourselves awake, playing music, having a little "Christmas party in our minds," and breaking out the stress food- the giant box of goldfish. I laughed so much that night and the i think there were about 5 quotes added to the quote wall that night. The next day i looked like a walking tired wreck.

I have lots of fun plans for the break....besides doing school projects:( like making a thankful tree, singing loudly in the car, visiting the 7 wonders of Enterprise, relaxing, and decorating turkey cupcakes, (that's cupcakes that look like turkeys, not turkey cupcakes.) Anyways...

Well, i should stop avoiding homework. That has been a bad norm this semester! but hey I've met my goal of being more social. :) Back to Spanish now! oh boy.

Oh i shall be making lots of posts about college fun during the break!
